In the United States, although courtrooms are open to the public, access is often limited to gallery seating or the back of the room. Additionally, court schedules do not always align with law students’ timetables.
To address this challenge, Grand Valley State University (GVSU) has developed an immersive virtual tour of a courtroom. This realistic immersion into their future professional environment allows law students to deepen their practical understanding of the legal system.
Objectives
- Immersion and Authenticity: Provide an immersive and realistic courtroom experience to help students visualize and become familiar with the legal environment.
- Accessibility and Flexibility: Students can access this virtual tour on various devices at any time, enabling them to learn at their own pace.
- Active Engagement: This experience enhances students’ practical understanding of courtroom operations, reinforcing their theoretical knowledge.

The Level of Accessibility is Remarkable
“You can go to the jury box, step onto the judge’s bench, and see the rules the judge applies… You can observe all sorts of things that would not be easily visible to a regular member of the public. The level of accessibility provided is truly remarkable from my perspective.”
— Courtney Topic, Assistant Professor of Legal Studies at Grand Valley State University
