The Challenge: Why Healthcare Training Needs to Change
Despite decades of quality improvement efforts, medical errors are on the rise.
Recent estimates suggest between 250,000 and 795,000 preventable adverse events occur in US hospitals every year, far more than early projections from 20 years ago.
At the same time, burnout, moral distress, and workforce shortages are pushing healthcare professionals to their limits.
The Missing Piece: Training That Actually Changes Behavior
Dr. Lukasz Mazur, CEO of MaiaZura and Professor at UNC School of Medicine, opened the webinar with a frank diagnosis: teams are not lacking goodwill or effort, they are lacking the kind of character-building, emotionally grounded training that translates into real behavioral change.
Replacing a physician costs up to $500,000. Every preventable error carries both human and financial consequences.
MaiaZura's Answer: A Real-Based Training Program
MaiaZura developed Bizon360, a reality-based training program built on 360° immersive video filmed in real hospitals with real healthcare professionals.
The program includes:
- Teamwork Module (Flagship): places learners in the shoes of a surgical resident navigating a routine surgery that goes wrong, exposing breakdowns in communication, leadership, and situational awareness
- Safety Mindfulness Module: a root cause analysis scenario set in Radiation Oncology
- Microlearning Sessions: 5 to 10-minute customizable modules supporting TeamSTEPPS, HRO, or any organization-specific framework
Try out their modules
All modules are accessible on desktop, mobile, or VR headsets, and can be integrated directly into an existing LMS with single sign-on.
Teamwork Module
Step into your colleagues' perspectives as they navigate through a "routine" surgery.
MaiaZura's Flagship Module, Try the 5-Minute Demo.
Safety Mindfulness Module
Conduct a root cause analysis meeting to uncover what went wrong with a recent patient treatment in the Radiation Oncology space.
Microlearning Sessions
5-10 minute microlearning sessions that are customizable to your organization's training framework.
Created by Clinicians, for Clinicians
Shawna Buchanan, who co-authored the training and spent years as a surgical trauma ICU nurse at UNC, drew directly from personal experience.
“How many people go through their workplace LMS and just click, click, click? That’s not helpful. It doesn’t make me feel like you understand where I’m coming from.”
— Shawna Buchanan, RN, CCRN — VP of Product Development, MaiaZura
Inside the Training: A Surgical Team Under Pressure
The scene is set in a struggling community hospital, understaffed and under financial pressure. The surgical team is real: a distracted attending, a resident stretched between career and family, a travel nurse on his first day, and an anesthesiologist with his mind on his newborn at home.
What follows is a cascade of small failures: missed cues, poor handoffs, silence where someone should have spoken up. The patient codes. The debrief that follows is where the real learning happens.
What the research says
Testimony
“The story has power. When people get immersed, they go to the core of why they would be a better leader tomorrow.”
— Dr. Lukasz Mazur, Founder & CEO, MaiaZura | Professor, UNC School of Medicine
Question
What immersive deployment strategies do you have? Can this be deployed in virtual reality on interactive large volume displays at high resolution?
Answer (from Lukasz): Yes, Bizon360 can be accessed on desktop, mobile, and full VR headsets at high resolution. This is one of the reasons MaiaZura partnered with Uptale, whose technology delivers exactly that capability.
